Working for over 40 years in the glass field, Carol Parrish Slovikosky has put her own spin on creating unique glass artwork.
Stained glass artwork is created using a variety of methods after designing the work. Hand picking and cutting the glass and using methods including lead, copper foil, painting and staining the glass. Designs used in my work are original and kilns are used for the process of painting and staining of the glass. Some items incorporate legendary designs but in my own interpretation in glass. My work includes new design, commissioned items and repair work.
The most intriguing part of working in glass is the “process” of creating the artwork. Being in the glass industry since 1984 and painting since the 1960’s, combining the two has always been one of my passions. To preserve the skills of traditional or “classical” (matt and trace) glass painting and help pass that skill to others in future years is an artistic goal that I continually strive for. The old masters and some of the 20thcentury masters, including those on my resume and Sylvia Nicolas, have inspired me to strive toward creating my own vision of work and continue the older traditional style of painting. I have had instruction by all of those on my resume at one point in time except Sylvia Nicolas. However, I have had the opportunity to spend time with her at her home and studio to talk and learn. They are all very giving of their experience and techniques with which I strive to excel and give to the next generation. There are unique challenges to both repair work with painting and replacing old glass, as well as the creation of new work; and both give their own rewards. Each project presents its own challenges and solutions. Working with light and glass has so many different aspects to it that it gives creativity the ability to flow in many different directions.
